RED ATHENA: A Heartfelt Exposé On Delusional, Deadly Activism

One feral horse.
One painfully naïve and misinformed feral horse “advocate.”
One deeply abused legal system.
Red Athena is the true and extraordinary story of a feral American horse who lost her life to starvation and thirst, and one painfully naïve and misinformed feral horse “advocate” that refused to believe that roundups save lives. It exposes the abuse of our legal system that allows special interest groups to prevent life-saving feral horse round-ups, the shameless fundraising behind those groups, and repeated failures of feral horse “advocacy” groups to bring humane and effective feral horse management ideas to the table.
This is the story of Red Athena.
Who lost her life, and became a mascot for the willfully delusional mentality and shameful fundraising operations of so-called feral horse “advocates.”
A Feral Horse’s Story
Red Athena is the powerful true story of a feral horse’s fight for life on a depleted and drought-stricken range—and the stubborn, misinformed “advocate” who refused to let Athena be rounded up and provided with ample feed and water for the rest of her life.
Set against the vast, dry, sparsely vegetated landscapes of the American West, the film follows the nauseating journey of a mare who was victimized by naïve romanticism and forced to “roam free” without sufficient resources to sustain her until her life was lost, bogged down in a mudhole, desperate for a sip of water, all because of the incessant, fantasy-based litigation by feral horse “advocates” to leave feral horses on the range at any cost.
A Broken System Exposed
When Red Athena and her family are scheduled to be gathered and taken to safety, they become victims of a deeply abused legal system that allows histrionic emotions to override law and science, and leaves grossly overpopulated wild horses on federally managed lands each year. Their needless suffering and abandonment expose a much greater crisis. Red Athena and her family just a mere few of tens of thousands of feral horses on American rangelands.
Enter Blaire Maples, a feral horse “advocate” who refuses to believe that freedom doesn’t fill feral horses’ bellies.
A Mission of Romanticism & Rampant Misinformation
Driven by naïve romanticism (and rampant misinformation) and fueled by Hollywood storylines, Blaire panhandles for donations and then litigates to keep Red Athena on the range, and embarks on a highly delusional mission to make sure more wild horses meet the same fate. For nine long months, Blaire works the legal system, defying long established range science and animal welfare standards, and effectively halts the system designed to save the lives of these horses.
Her stubbornness transforms into a powerful campaign to ensure freedom at any cost--for not just Red Athena, but all feral horses.
A Movement Begins
With unprecedented access to BLM officials, helicopter contractors, wildlife experts, cattle ranchers, lobbyists and whistleblowers, Red Athena blends gripping investigative journalism with stunning—albeit disturbing--cinematography.
This is more than a documentary— it’s a call to action. By exposing hidden truths and highlighting the extreme delusion of one urban woman, Red Athena aims to ignite a national movement for saving wild horses’ lives through lawful, science-based management.
